Viewing switch configurations in the new LANState (Pro) 10.5

Let’s review the latest update of our network management program LANState to the version 10.5. There’s two pieces of news: one good, one great. Where should we start? 🙂

OK, let’s start by saying that LANState is now completely free… for home use 🙂 We provide unlimited functionality for up to 25 hosts. When you first launch LANState, you decide how you want to use it: a 30-day trial with 50 hosts or a use the program with 25 hosts forever. You can change this mode at any time in the program menu.

The second piece of news is that LANState can now retrieve the switch configuration files via SSH. These are the aforementioned running-config, startup-config, and vlan.dat files.

We’ll explain in more detail.

Viewing Switch Configurations
A new Switch Configuration section has been added to the System Information. This section allows you to remotely retrieve and view key configuration files from managed switches via a secure SSH connection. The following configuration types are supported:

  • running-config — the currently active configuration loaded into the device’s RAM.
  • startup-config — the saved configuration used during device boot.
  • vlan.dat — (for compatible devices, such as Cisco) — a file containing VLAN configuration information.

Configurations are retrieved directly via SSH commands (e.g., show running-config, show startup-config, etc.) and then displayed in a convenient text window within the program interface.

This feature significantly speeds up routine tasks:

  • Quick configuration access: no need to open a separate SSH client—all the necessary information is available in the same interface that displays the network topology and device status.
  • On-the-spot diagnostics: in the event of a failure or suspected misconfiguration, the administrator can instantly check the current settings of ports, VLANs, ACLs, STP, routing, and more.
  • Configuration consistency check: quickly compare the running-config and startup-config to ensure that changes have been saved.
  • Enhanced security: using SSH ensures encrypted data transfer, unlike unsecured protocols such as TFTP or Telnet.

All the version changes listed:

  • Added the ability to view the managed switch configurations (“System Information”).
  • The program can now be used free of charge and indefinitely with up to 25 hosts on all maps.
  • The “Merge Test Results” check has been improved. The “Notify if more than N tests fail” rule has been added.
  • Added the “Consider the status of map links when evaluating the status of the map itself” setting (Monitoring section).
  • Added the font color change for numeric indicators during alarms.
  • Added a setting to hide host labels on the geomap.
  • Added a setting to disable the display of messages on the screen over other windows.
  • Optimized the mechanism for generating and sending scheduled reports.
  • Fixed a bug in the POP3 mailbox monitoring.
  • Fixed the function for retrieving the ARP table and determining IP by MAC.
  • All log lines, not just the selected ones, were copied to the clipboard. Fixed.
  • An issue with displaying the host header in reports has been fixed.
